A PERSONAL NOTE
In more than forty years of rich martial arts experience, I've not discovered a more traditional art than Kwongsai Jook Lum Temple Praying Mantis Kungfu. Although, in my first ten years of training, I earned black belts in other martial arts and gained first hand knowledge of many styles, I can say out of experience, not bias, there are very few old style combative arts extant.
And those arts can be distinguished by their form and function. In example, in the same room, ask a variety of martial art styles to practice. What do you see? They all look somewhat different. But ask them to use their skill and what do you see? They all look the same - back fist, reverse punch, side kick - or they revert to boxing with kicks. Their form and their function are not the same. What they practice is not what they use for self defense. Old style traditional arts are not that way. What you practice is how you are forced to fight or defend yourself. Form and function are the same. And there are very few of those old style martial arts today. Self defense is first the key.
Because Southern Praying Mantis is one of those Arts, for the last thirty three years, I have thought to master it. I am not yet satisfied with my skill. The road has been less than smooth and I've had many obstacles to overcome, chief among them not being Chinese. But, perserverance has it's reward.
Circa 1993, after long deliberation and consultation with the seniors and elders of this Pai, I've decided to remove some of the obstacles in learning such a rare fighting art and make it accessible to those who qualify but have no opportunity to learn. It is our hope by doing so in a traditional, yet non-conventional way, that the natural "live power" of this rare Art will be appreciated by traditional martial artists everywhere.
